The Cats were ripe for the picking last week when the Blues caused an upset at the G’ on Friday night. Unfortunately for the Cats things aren’t much better. They welcome back All-Australian full back Matthew Scarlett along with Mark Blake, David Johnson and Haryy Taylor at the expense of David Wojcinski (ankle), Darren Milburn (ankle), Max Rooke (knee soreness) and Kane Tenace (ommited).

Friday nights at the MCG have been nothing short of ugly for the Blues this season. Losses to Essendon by 54 points and Collingwood by 69 on the big stage would certainly take a bit of confidence out of the Blues coming in to this match. On paper the Blues look to be in form winning 4 of their last 5. Looking deeper in to that stat and you will discover they’ve had less than convincing wins against Fremantle, Richmond, Sydney & North Melbourne.

Forget about the cellar dwellars its games like this that we look forward to. Two in-form teams going head to head. Geelong may not have much at stake, they’re basically guaranteed a top 2 spot however an Adelaide win see them move up in to the top 4. The Cats have been a little rusty in recent weeks. They avoided the draw against the Hawks last week with a kick after the siren from Jimmy Bartel, who plays his 150th match this weekend.

The Grand Final replay…replay. If you had of asked me late September 2008 where I thought these two clubs would sit on the ladder at this stage in 2009 no doubt I would have said 1 & 2. As would 99% of the population with half a clue. In fact most people would have laughed if you said that Hawthorn would be desperately fighting to win a finals spot.

Hmm last years premiership team vs last years wooden spooners…tough game to pick! The Cats however have lost two on the trot, something we haven’t seen in a while. They will welcome back Ablett, Scarlett, Mackie, Varcoe, Ling, Milburn to the side that takes on Melbourne on Saturday at the expense of Brownlow medalist Jimmy Bartel with a hip injury. Joining Jimmy on the sidelines this weekend is Nathan Djerrkura (corked thigh), Mark Blake, Ryan Gamble, Jeremy Laidler, Tom Gillies.

When SportsAlive opened betting on AFL on Monday Brisbane were at $3.25 to win, Geelong $1.35. On Thursday the Cats odds dropped dramatically when Cameron Ling, Matthew Scarlett, James Kelly & Darren Milburn were all out of the side that last week lost to St Kilda. Not only that but Steve Johnson also failed to recover after being a late withdrawal in last weeks game.
Multi of the Week: Round 14

I’m going against my own advice and putting Melbourne in my multi-bet. When I previewed the game I wasn’t aware of a few factors. At the time of the post I was aware that Jim Stynes was stepping aside, I just didn’t know how serious it was. When Dean Cox wasn’t named in the West Coast side and Daniel Kerr was out with general soreness everything is pointing towards a Melbourne win.
