Leading bookmakers hacked

We knew something was fishy when we realised and reported on Twitter that a number of the leading online bookmakers in Australia websites had crashed and were offline. Later that morning we heard and tweeted that it was due to a web attack.

Melbourne’s Herald Sun today confirmed the attacks on Sportingbet and SportsAlive.

It appears to have been a DDoS (Denial-of-Service) Attack, hackers do this by sending huge amounts of hits to the servers that the websites sit on. An amount that the servers cannot handle causing them to go offline.

The attack seems to have been deliberately timed to send the sites offline in time for the weekend and would have caused the bookmakers millions of dollars in turnover.

Australian Federal Police are investigating the attacks.
